Best Notch Apps for Mac

Make your MacBook notch useful with music controls, file trays, clipboard tools and live alerts. Find a free pick or a paid app that fits your day.

8 apps · Updated

A notch app turns the space around your MacBook's camera into a small panel for music, files or live updates: a third-party Dynamic Island-style experience for Mac. The useful part is what it saves you opening. Pick the task you repeat most, then choose an app around it.

Want a quick starting point? Try Ledge for free everyday essentials on a notched MacBook with macOS 26+, or NotchNook for a broader widget and file-tray setup. If you spend your day with coding agents, start with Perch.

This shortlist covers apps already published on MacNative. Each pick has a different reason to install it, with its main requirement or limitation beside it.

Perch
Developer ToolsFree & open source

Perch lives behind your Mac's notch and keeps track of your coding agents: Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode and pi, in their own apps, in Conductor or in any terminal, plus Cursor's agent chats (beta).

  • While you work: when a session you're not in finishes or asks for something, the notch grows with what happened and folds away again.
  • Where was I: back from a break, a card shows the session, what the agent did and the next step if it named one (⌃⌥P).
  • Answer from the notch: allow or deny a command (A / D) or pick an answer to a question (1 to 4).
  • Jump back in: one key opens the exact session: the Claude app, Codex, a Conductor workspace, the tab in Terminal, iTerm2, Ghostty or Warp, or the pane in tmux, herdr or cmux.
  • Make it yours: pick a character and a colour. It lives behind the notch and its eyes follow your cursor.

Local only: Perch reads the session files your agents already keep. No account, no analytics. Live status hooks are optional and removed when you turn them off.

Free and MIT. Signed and notarized by Apple, updates itself.

  • Volume and brightness readouts that replace the system pop-ups.
  • Keep Awake, including with the lid closed. The helper is installed only while that mode is on.

Written from scratch in Swift. Free and open source (GPL-3.0), signed and notarized, with no account and no telemetry. Every feature can be turned off on its own. Needs a MacBook with a notch on macOS 26 or later.

Hushtop
Productivity$9.99 · one-time (7-day free trial, then one payment)

Hushtop lives in the MacBook notch and fills it with the things you keep checking anyway.

What's playing, with synced lyrics if you turn them on. The next meeting and a Join button. AirPods battery for each bud and the case. The volume HUD. A shelf for files and AirDrop. Clipboard history, Mac vitals, and a small set of developer tools: ports, Docker, Git, Homebrew.

The part it was built for: when Claude Code or Codex stops and waits for a yes, the question shows up in the notch and you answer it there, without hunting for the terminal. It can also keep the Mac awake while an agent or a build is still running, then let it sleep when the job's done.

And there's a small cat living in the notch. It wasn't in the plan.

Native Swift and SwiftUI, Apple silicon, macOS 15 or later. No account, no telemetry, signed and notarized by Apple. Free for 7 days, then $9.99 once.

Which notch app fits your day?

  • Music and meetings Ledge or NotchNook: choose Ledge for a free set of daily essentials if your Mac meets its requirements. Choose NotchNook when you want a file tray and a broader widget setup. Ledge does not include a file shelf.
  • Coding agents Perch or Hushtop: choose Perch for a free tool focused on agents that finish or need an answer. Choose Hushtop if you also want music, meeting controls and AirPods updates in the same app.
  • Widgets or clipboard Notchlight or NotchMind: choose Notchlight to arrange widgets on your lock screen. Choose NotchMind when your repeated task is reusing copied text, formatting JSON or moving files.

Make your notch useful in five minutes

  1. Choose one job. Skip tracks, park files between apps, check your next meeting, or spot an agent waiting for you. Start with the one you actually need.
  2. Try one notch app at a time. Quit your current island utility before trying another so you can judge its gestures and alerts clearly.
  3. Test your real setup. Play music in your usual app, drag a file between two windows, then try full-screen video, sleep and wake, and your external display. Check whether the panel appears only when you want it.
  4. Keep only useful alerts. Disable widgets you never open. A good setup should save a trip to another window.

Worth showing a friend Drag a file into NotchNook's tray, let NotchMind recognize copied JSON, or let Perch bring you back to the coding session that needs an answer. Those small moments explain the appeal better than a long feature list. See the developer demos for NotchNook, NotchMind and Perch.

Free notch apps, free tiers and trials

Ledge and Perch are free and open source. Ledge covers everyday status; Perch focuses on coding agents. They solve different problems.

Perchy has a lasting free tier, with smaller limits than Pro: two coins, five clipboard entries and three tray files. Its trial temporarily unlocks more. Compare Perchy's tiers.

The free trials for NotchNook, Hushtop and Notchlight let you evaluate paid apps. They are useful for testing your Mac, but they are not permanent free versions.

Before you install: compatibility and permissions

Check macOS version, chip and display support separately. An app that works on an Intel Mac may still require a newer macOS release; an app that works on a MacBook's notch may not show on your desk monitor. Ledge is the most restrictive pick here: a built-in notched display and macOS 26+.

Permissions depend on the feature. Calendar access lets a widget show meetings; camera access enables a mirror. Notchlight's notification feature needs Full Disk Access to read the protected macOS notification database. Enable the features you intend to use and follow the developer's setup guide. Frequently asked questions

What is the best notch app for Mac?

Choose by the job: NotchNook for widgets and files, Ledge for free essentials, Perch for coding agent alerts, or Notchlight if lock-screen widgets are the main attraction. The comparison above includes the requirement or tradeoff that could change your choice.

Is there a free NotchNook alternative?

Ledge is a useful free alternative if you mainly want music, timers, meetings and notes. It needs a notched MacBook running macOS 26 or later and does not provide a file shelf. For agent alerts rather than an everyday widget panel, try Perch. Neither is a complete feature-for-feature replacement. See Ledge's features and requirements.

Is NotchNook free?

NotchNook offers a 48-hour trial, followed by a paid Classic or Pro license. Pro adds features including AI agent controls and a teleprompter and requires Apple silicon; Classic also supports Intel. Compare the editions before buying rather than assuming every feature is in both. Current NotchNook editions and trial.

Do notch apps work on a Mac without a notch?

Some do. NotchNook opens from a handle on screens without a notch; Perch uses a small tab at the top. Ledge requires the built-in notched display. Check both your chip and macOS version: NotchNook Pro requires Apple silicon and macOS 14.6+, while Classic also supports Intel; Perch requires Apple silicon and macOS 15+. NotchNook compatibility · Perch requirements.

Will a notch app fix menu bar icons hidden behind the camera?

An island panel adds controls around the notch. If your main problem is crowded menu bar icons, look at Tuck or Bartender 6 instead. Check the tool's display behavior with your usual apps before settling on it.

Do notch apps drain battery or slow down a Mac?

There is no comparable battery benchmark behind this shortlist. Test your chosen app during an ordinary work session: watch its CPU and energy use in Activity Monitor, first with the panel idle, then with the features you keep enabled. Disable animations or widgets you do not need and compare again before paying. A longer feature list does not establish better performance.

This collection includes existing published MacNative listings with a clear notch-centered use. Selection is based on developer documentation, not hands-on performance testing. Editions, prices and compatibility can change.
