Tailscale

Security & PrivacyFree for personal use · paid team plansby Tailscale

A zero-config mesh VPN built on WireGuard — connect your Macs, servers, and phones into one private network that works behind any NAT or firewall.

Tailscale creates a private network between your devices, wherever they are. Sign in on each machine and they can reach each other directly over an encrypted WireGuard tunnel — no port forwarding, no static IPs, no VPN concentrator to run.

Why it makes the list

Remote access to a home server or a work machine used to mean fragile port forwarding or a clunky corporate VPN. Tailscale makes it a two-minute setup, the Mac client is clean and native, and the model — your identity, your devices, direct connections — is genuinely better for privacy.

Standout features

  • WireGuard-based encrypted connections, usually peer-to-peer

  • MagicDNS — reach devices by name instead of IP address

  • Access control lists to limit which devices can talk to which

  • Exit nodes to route traffic through a device you trust

  • Taildrop for sending files directly between your own machines

  • Single sign-on with an existing identity provider

Pricing

Free for personal use, covering up to 100 devices and three users. Paid plans add more users and team controls.
