Gmail Labels Not Showing in Apple Mail? Check These Two Problems

The MacNative Team4 min read

Missing Gmail folders and missing label badges need different fixes. Check your account, label visibility, and whether Mimestream solves the problem.

If Gmail labels are missing in Apple Mail, first check what is missing: a mailbox in the sidebar, or a label beside an individual message. Those are different problems. Changing sync settings will not necessarily give Mail the same label display as Gmail.

For example, an invoice can carry both “Clients” and “To pay” in Gmail. Finding it inside two Mail mailboxes is different from seeing both labels attached to it in your inbox.

Documentation checked October 4, 2026. This is a troubleshooting guide based on the sources linked below, not a hands-on comparison of mail clients.

Bottom line

Check the message and its labels in Gmail on the web first. If the label exists there but its mailbox is missing in Mail, investigate account and visibility settings. If you want Gmail-style labels on messages, use Gmail itself or consider Mimestream.

Start with the same message in both places

Open Gmail in your browser and confirm you are using the same account as Mail. Find one affected message by its sender and subject. Check whether the expected label is actually applied.

Google distinguishes labels from folders: a message can have more than one label. Removing a label is also different from deleting the message. Google’s label guide

What you seeWhat to investigate
The label is missing in Gmail tooThe label or account itself, before changing Mail
The label exists in Gmail but has no mailbox in MailSidebar, account and label visibility
The mailbox exists, but an expected message is absentThe message’s labels, Mail filters and synchronization
The message is present, but lacks Gmail-style colored labelsThe client’s label display, rather than missing mail

If a label’s mailbox is missing

  1. Show Mail’s sidebar and expand the relevant Google account. Check beneath parent mailboxes for nested labels.
  2. In Gmail on the web, open Settings → See all settings → Labels. If your account exposes Show in IMAP for the affected label, check it. Don’t confuse it with visibility in Gmail’s own label list.
  3. Return to Mail and allow it to synchronize. Check a single affected label before changing several settings.
  4. If the mailbox is there but messages seem absent, turn off active message filters and check Mail’s category view.

Google’s Workspace documentation covers label visibility for IMAP clients. Account type and administrator settings can change the options available; a missing checkbox is not a reason to repeatedly remove your account. Apple also documents filters and categories that can hide messages.

Use a harmless message for diagnosis. Apply a clearly named label such as “Mail visibility test” in Gmail, then see whether that mailbox and message become available in Mail. That separates a general connection problem from a problem with one existing label.

If you want label badges on each message

Being able to open a label as a mailbox does not establish that Mail can reproduce every part of Gmail’s interface. If your workflow depends on seeing several colored labels at once, try the same message in Gmail’s browser interface before spending time rebuilding mailboxes.

Mimestream is a native Mac alternative built around the Gmail API. Its documentation describes assigning multiple labels, nested labels, colors and separate visibility controls. Mimestream’s label documentation

Productivity · $4.99/mo (free trial)

A native macOS email client built specifically for Gmail — the speed and system integration of Apple Mail, with the labels, filters, and search Gmail users actually rely on.

There is a cost to that convenience: the individual plan was $49.99/year or $4.99/month, with a 14-day trial, when checked. Prices are USD before applicable taxes. Gmail in a browser remains the option to try before paying for a different interface. Current pricing

Check these actions before switching clients

Take one unimportant email and apply two labels in Gmail. Then check whether you can find both labels, recognize them on the message, remove just one, and archive the message without losing track of it. Check the result in Gmail after each action.

Don’t treat appearances in several labeled mailboxes as evidence of duplicate messages that need deleting. Decide whether your problem is visibility, organization or genuinely missing mail first. The right fix should make that one test message behave predictably before you reorganize your inbox.
